Citizenship – A Privilege and Responsibility


The volunteer staff of the LSCGG have completed the indexing of all citizenship records that are available on microfilm at the LSCGG office. That project stands at 22,136 records that include (in some cases): (1) Certificate of Arrival; (2) Declaration of Intention; (3) Petition for Citizenship; and (4) photo of the applicant.

(A) Certificate of Arrival often includes:

(1) Port of Entry;
(2) Name of Individual;
(3) Date of Arrival;
and (4) Manner of Arrival (i.e. name of railroad or ship).

(B) Declaration of Intention usually includes:

(1) location of county court;
(2) name of applicant;
(3) age of applicant;
(4) occupation of applicant;
(5) detailed personal description;
(6) place of birth;
(7) specific date of birth;
(8) current residence;
(9) port of departure;
(10) name of vessel;
(11) last foreign residence;
(12) marriage status;
(13) if married, the name, birth date, and current residence of a wife; (14) names, birth dates, and residence of any children;
(15) name of nation to which the applicant is renouncing citizenship;
(16) port of arrival;
(17) date of arrival;
(18) signature of applicant;
and (19) date of document.

(C) Petition for Citizenship sometimes includes:

(1) location of county court;
(2) full name of the petitioner;
(3) current place of residence;
(4) current occupation;
(5) place of birth;
(6) specific date of birth;
(7) race;
(8) date and place where the declaration of intent was made;
(9) if married, the name, birth date, and current residence of a wife;
(10) names, birth dates, and residence of any children;
(11) last foreign residence;
(12) port of departure;
(13) port of entry;
(14) name at time of entry;
(15) date of entry;
(16) name of vessel;
(17) name of nation to which the applicant is renouncing citizenship;
(18) dates  and county of residence for five year period;
(19) affirmation that the petition is the first for the applicant;
(20) full signature of applicant;
(21) detailed affidavits of two witnesses who have acquaintance with the applicant;
(22) signatures of county officials;
(23) Oath of Allegiance of the applicant;
(24) date that the oath was made;
and (25) if the petition was granted, the certificate number;
or (26) if the petition was denied, the reason for denial.
